Simply Divine by Lisa Vanderpump

Lisa Vanderpump’s name has become synonymous with a divine Beverly Hills lifestyle. Appearing as one of the lavish women on Bravo’s hit reality series, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, audiences get to peak in on an extravagant lifestyle that many dream about and few attain. Lisa and her husband, Ken, have owned 26 restaurants, bars and clubs and currently own two restaurants; SUR in West Hollywood and Villa Blanca in Beverly Hills. Lisa has put her knowledge and expertise from doing business in the restaurant industry, her experience in doing extensive decorating of her multiple homes, including the current one she resides in Beverly Hills, and entertaining many guests (which is her passion) into writing. Her new book, Simply Divine, is an all out guide on entertaining, including decorating, table settings and recipes. In my opinion, she is definitely no entertaining guru like Martha Stewart, but she never claims to be either. There are a plethora of other entertaining books out there, and this like the others has some nice tips to offer. As you can see from the book cover, Lisa did not get her apparent nickname, “Pinky” for nothing. It is clear that pink is her favorite color because the cover is pink, the blouse she wears is pink, the chair she sits on is pink, the tea pot is pink… and in the book, she uses pink a lot with flowers and décor. Her style is classy, glamorous and elegant....she oozes rich! Her book is separated by types of days: holidays, lazy days, sunny days, sexy days, etc. She includes many tips on garnishes, plating food, presentations, decorating the table, arranging flowers, music selection, hostess gifts and much much more. My favorite part of the books is all the recipes. Since she is English, she includes a lot of recipes for typical British foods that are common to her but for foreign to me. I have heard of all these foods and even tasted some of them, but definitely have not made any of them. But I do think it will be fun to try. Here are the recipes I want to try: Bangers & Mash, Spotted Dick, Yorkshire Pudding, Shepherd’s Pie and Beef Wellington. I especially love a good beef wellington, but I certainly have never attempted to make it. Of course I will let you know when I do, and how it turns out. I found the book interesting and easy to read. My only criticism is that I did not enjoy the pictures that much. The photographer, Jason Varney, did a nice job snapping the photos, but I felt like the photos included were somewhat unnecessary. She has a little too many pictures of herself just sitting on a couch or just cutting vegetables or sipping wine and not enough pictures of the food being prepared or pictures of the steps in the recipe, or even the final dish when it is all prepared. I am very visual and when I see a dish that looks yummy, I want to try it. If there are not enough pictures of food, It does not entice my taste buds. Overall, I DID like the book and enjoyed reading it and will try to cook some of Lisa's recipes. I think anyone who wants to get a few entertaining tips or wants to try some typical British food would also enjoy the book. And if you have no desire what so ever to entertain but you are a fan of her show, you may want to check out the book to simply flip though and see the photos. Let me put it this way, she’s no Martha Stewart! But hey, who is? Come check out the book, Simply Divine, from the WHS library! Happy reading, darlings!

Martha's Entertaining

On November 19th, I had an opportunity to attend a charity antique show where Martha Stewart was a keynote speaker. I was delighted to purchase a copy of her brand new book Martha's Entertaining and have it signed by her! The 432 page book took years to put together and is filled with awe inspiring table settings, gorgeous flowers, yummy recipes, great ideas and tips for entertaining guest for various holidays and parties. At the book signing, pictures were unfortunately not allowed, and Martha's security rivaled Barak's. She looked stunning in a white tunic and drop earrings. I was not surprised that she looked older in person than she does on TV and in the glossy magazines. In person, she actually looks her age, but in magazines, with all the makeup, lighting and airbrushing, it is hard to believe that she is 70 years old. That's not to say she did not look absolutely fabulous in person! She was very friendly and spoke to every single person in line for a minute. When it was my turn to get my book autographed, I told her that I was a huge fan and that I was a high school librarian and purchased all her books for the library. She was of course happy to hear that, and we chatted about the library for a few minutes until her managers, publishers, assistants and security detail rushed me off to make room at the signing table for another fan in line. After that, I came home and marveled at the sight of my new, autographed book! Don't have money to spend on this book? NO PROBLEM! I wasn't lying to Martha about ordering all her books for the library! The WHS library has her new book, Martha's Entertaining available for check out. Don't you just love the library?! :-)

Here's a first look at the new book cover for The Hunger Games movie tie-in edition. According to Shelf Life, it will "outline the major players, participants, and perils of the Games (injuries, fires, mutations, etc.) and provide a visual tour of Katniss’ life and home." I think the movie tie-in edition looks similar to the movie posters previously released. This would be pretty cool book to add to your collection if you're a super fan. Check out the other covers such as the Official Illustrated Movie Companion and The Hunger Games Tribute Guide on Shelf Life.

Beagles Used in Animal Testing

KTLA in Los Angeles reports that about 70,000 dogs are tested on in labs in the United States. And… it is legal. The most commonly used breed is the beagle because of their sweet, friendly, docile and trusting nature. Warning, the video on the KTLA website is graphic. But there is a wonderful nonprofit organization called The Beagle Freedom Project that frees beagles used in animal experimentation and helps get them adopted into loving homes. Some of the beagles rescued by this organization have never lived outside of a cage and have never seen the light of day. According to NBC Los Angeles, yesterday, 40 beagles that were used in laboratory experimentation in Spain were rescued, brought to Los Angeles, and put up for adoption. This organization is doing a lot of good to help out man's best friend. I can't believe it's already time for Thanksgiving. The fall semester is flying by! If you need to get a book to get you through the weekend, please come by no later than Tuesday at lunch. Paws on Patios

Have you heard of the Paws on Patios movement? I was reading the Chronicle online and ran into the Dog Breath blog. Apparently, there are many places in Houston that do not allow dogs on the patios of their restaurants. Would you be offended if you were sitting outside and another customer had a well behaved dog at the next table? I have to admit, I have taken my dog to restaurants like Barnaby's that have a dog friendly reputation and sat outside with no problem and no complaints. According to Life and Dog,"There’s a movement sweeping through the Houston dog community, and it has to do with the pesky city ordinance that prevents us from dining with our four-legged friends." Houston resident Patrick Walsh has "set out to make our city a more dog-friendly place." He has started a group called Paws on Patios and their main goal is to reach out to local restaurants to try and get the ordinance changed. They believe that ending the prohibition of dogs on patios is the right thing to do for our city. Personally, I agree. I think if people are bothered by dogs on the patio, they should sit inside. Lost Battle

On Wednesday, October 12, 2011, my dear friend and Westside collegue, Scott Schroen, lost his courageous battle from complications of an aorta dissection. He died peacefully with his loving family around him. He was a wonderful man; kind, generous, thoughtful and loving. He was adored by the entire faculty and students. He will be greatly missed.

It’s like the original novels with Serena and Blair, but this time, the author has added murderous elements! Can you imagine Serena and Blair as psycho killers? Well, believe it! She describes it as “sort of this alternate universe where people are dying, and the adults are kind of brushing it under the rug the way they used to brush under the rug, you know, partying and sex and all that.” So now the upper east side is more dangerous… beware of just gossip here! 50 Cent

OMG! I never thought I would blog about 50 Cent, but it turns out he's written a young adult novel called Playground due out November 1st. It's about an overweight 13 year old boy dealing with the pressures of middle school and a broken family. He gets suspended from school for assaulting another student, vies for his mom's attention and deals with his deadbeat dad's drama. The only positive influences in his life are his therapist Liz and his friend Nia. From the summary, it seems like a predictable YA novel, but one that some kids, especially boy will like. So, I'm putting it on the order list. Look for it in the library hopefully before Turkey Day.

Puppy Tips by Buster Forbes

1) BARK- Bark and/or howl at any and ALL noises that you hear in and out of the house including your human's electric toothbrush and the swiffer sweaper. The louder the better.

2) BEG- Always beg for food. Always. Sometimes humans yell at you to stop begging, but MOST times, they feel bad and feed you from the table. Suckers!

3) BLAME- When you get in trouble, blame the cat. If there’s no cat, blame the kid. If there’s no kid, turn your head slightly to the side and look really, really sad.

4) CHASE- Rule of thumb: if it moves, chase it. Delightful things to chase include your tail, the vacuum cleaner, cats, squirrels, lizards, mailman, cars.

5) CHEW- Your human will buy you toys. Don’t use them. Their shoes are way better. Feel free to experiment with other chewable things such as homework, books, furniture, fake plants, real plants, cords, whatever.

6) DESTROY- If your human tries to make you wear a sweater or costume, destroy it by ripping it into shreds within the first 30 seconds. If you don’t, your human will continue to dress you up for the remainder of your life.

7) DOMINANCE- You want to be the alpha dog or the leader. If you show dominance by growling, showing your teeth or biting, but your human will send you straight to the pound, so don’t do it. Try humping your human’s leg. Sometimes that backfires. You can also mark your territory by peeing everywhere. This too may backfire. Your last resort is to roll over and allow your human to be the alpha dog.

8) DIG- Start by digging up the flower beds to bury your bone. An advanced trick is to dig under the fence for an out of the yard escapade. If you can’t accomplish this task on the first try, don’t give up. 9) DRINK- When drinking water, make sure 10% goes into your mouth and 90% goes everywhere else. Also, try drinking out of the toilet. It is cool and refreshing. If you drink too fast and need to barf, use the bathroom floor. It is hilarious to watch your human step in the barf or better yet, slip and fall.

10) EAT- When eating your food, gobble in less than 2 minutes and then sniff your bowl and look depressed. Often times, your human is dumb enough to feed you another scoop. Eat anything that falls on the ground and anything on a table that you can reach.

11) FETCH- This is when your human takes you to the backyard or to the park and throws stuff like a stick, ball, toy or Frisbee and you fetch. No clue why this is fun, but it totally is!

12) LICK- Be sure to lick your behind first, then your human. Lick the garbage can first, then your human. Lick the floor, then your human. It’s the only way to go.

Here I am napping. I passed out from my full day of scratching, licking, digging and chasing my tail.

13) PET- This is when your human strokes your fur. It is calming and sometimes makes you sleepy. You’ll love it so if they stop petting you, just whine and they start it up again. If you can worm your way onto the human’s lap, it’s even better.

14) POTTY- You can’t pee or poop until you are outside and hear this word. But if you can’t hold your pee, go on the Persian rug. If you can't hold your poop, just go in a hidden spot in the house and attempt to blame the cat. See rule #3.

15) REFUSE- If it is raining, absolutely refuse to go outside. Only go IF your human volunteers to go out in the rain with you, stand there and get soaking wet while you sniff the grass. It’s totally worth it.

16) RIDE- This means that you will get to go in the car. Best bet is to stick your head out the window and enjoy the air. If you try to jump out, you might get banned from the car, so don’t do it.

Here I am in the car. Not allowed to stick my head out anymore. Don't want to talk about it.

17) RUN- Running is fun, especially down the stairs. Be sure to run faster than your human and cut them off. It is funny when you trip them and they fall down the stairs. That’s how my human broke her foot. Dummy!

18) SCRATCH- Scratching is very soothing. Don’t just scratch yourself; also enjoy scratching on the carpet, the rugs, bed linens, the couch, and pretty much anything that is soft or plush.

19) SLEEP- Your human will buy you a bed. Don’t use it. Their bed is more comfortable. During your nap time, be sure to fart, drool, and/or snore.

20) SLOBBER- Slobbering is a fun and enjoyable activity to share with your human. It is pertinent that you slobber on expensive material objects.

21) SNIFF- Sniffing comes in handy so do it a lot. Sniff anything and everything. Start with your human’s behind. However, sniffing certain creatures like skunks, bees, snakes or spiders can have dire consequences. Consider yourself warned.

22) TREAT- This is a yummy snack that you get after you complete an idiotic trick your human taught you like sit, stay, or shake. Totally pointless, but it’s worth it.

23) VET- If you hear this word, run and hide. It means you are going to get shots and have something stuck up your bum.

24) WAG- Wagging your tail is awesome. Do it often.

25) WALK- This is when your human takes you outside on a leash and lets you pull them around the neighborhood or park until they are exhausted. Other fun things to do on a walk are peeing on fire hydrants, pooping on the neighbor’s yard, wrapping leash around a tree and barking obnoxiously at other dogs and humans.

This is the summer Clio has waited for her whole life. School is out, she has a great job and she’s met the guy of her dreams. Things could not be better. Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil

I was looking through all my blog drafts when I noticed I had a saved, unpublished draft from June 2010! What the heck? After clicking on the draft, I noticed the cover picture (thanks Vintage Books) of the novel. I suppose I had started the draft when I went to Georgia this past summer. Before going, I prepared myself by reading John Berendt's Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, a true crime novel about a socialite, Jim Williams who stands trial for the murder of his companion, Danny Hansford. I LOVED the book! First and foremost, the main character in this book is Savannah! The book reads like fiction, due to its crazy, soap opera like content, but in fact, it is a true story....even better than fiction. Ironically, my husband knows a guy that lived in Savannah during the same time period. Cool! Anyway, the book is totally worth reading. But please don't watch the movie, it is choppy and confusing. Some character names are changed, characters are completely cut out, facts are deleted, major events are omitted... really bizarre. Even though the movie, starring Kevin Spacey, John Cusack, and a very young Jude Law in one of his earlier roles, has some fine actors; unfortunately, it was not enough to make the movie even remotely tolerable for me. It was really hard to follow, which is terrible, because the book was very well laid out and pretty easy to understand. So, take my advice and borrow a copy of the book from the WHS library and get reading. FYI: we have it on audio too!

The popular bookseller, Borders, files for bankruptcy. According to The Wall Street Journal, Borders' "lower consumer spending and fierce competition" are the reasons for its demise. Decision Points

Decision Points by George W. Bush was an excellent memoir by our 43rd President. President Bush looks at critical decisions that he had to face during his presidency. Among them were stem cell research, Iraq War, 9/11 attacks, hurricane Katrina and the financial crisis in 2007. He also interjects personal aspects of his life such as a drinking problem, meeting his future wife, an encounter with Billy Graham that changed him spiritually, and relationships with various world leaders. Whether a Republican or Democrat, the reader will walk away with a different kind of respect for him. This book was a fascinating read and a great opportunity to learn about President Bush's thought process in making life changing decisions. Water for Elephants

Author Sara Gruen did extensive research about the Great Depression era circuses before penning her historical fiction novel, Water for Elephants. The main character, Jacob, is an old man at a nursing home as he recounts his younger days working as a circus vet. There is a love story line between Jacob and Marlena, a beautiful horse trainer in the circus, who is already married. Marlena's husband, August, is an awful person who is horribly mean to her and all the animals. The working conditions for the circus are horrendous, people and animals are starving and there is animal cruelty. You definitely sympathize for the animals (especially, Rosie the elephant) in the many graphic and disturbing scenes of animal abuse (for mature audiences only!!!) Although the book was depressing, it was a happier ending. Sorry if you did not want to know that! I thought the book was well researched, well written and worth reading. With that said, the reason I am blogging about his book (published in 2007) is because yesterday I read a news story on The Today Show about 25 lions that were rescued from a foreign circus. It made me think about this book. So, I Googled the book to gain a cover picture for my blog (thanks Algonquin Books). I stumbled across a new trailer for the Water for Elephants motion picture currently being filmed, due out this April. I am a little worried about how the novel will translate to film. The trailer makes it seem like the movie will focus primarily on Jacob and Marlena's romance. However, the part that worries me is that in the trailer, really glamorized the circus. OH NO!!! That's terrible-- I hope the movie will at least stay a little true to the book and actually de-glamorize the circus. I don not want adults to rush out and purchase circus tickets for their children. But realistically, how is this movie going to be true to the book? Are they going to show graphic animal abuse?? I do not beleive audiences want to watch that. Although I will not watch the movie, I am certain I will read and hear about it. I just have a serious disdain for circuses. I always have. In fact, I hate all live animal acts. I think it is horrible for the poor animals to have to perform day after day. Seriously, lions and elephants are not meant to do tricks. That is absurd! Trapeze acts, fire eaters, acrobats and clowns are all fine and dandy. I personally enjoy Cirque du Soleil which is considered an animal-friendly circus because it does not use animals, to be a wonderful entertainment alternative. Check out this list of other animal-free circuses. And if you are really in the mood to get on the "I hate the circus" bandwagon, check out the Peta website. Be warned, it is really graphic.

Yale law professor, Amy Chua's article, Why Chinese Mothers are Superior in the Wall Street Journal is causing quite a stir! The article is an excerpt form Amy's new book, Battle Hymn of the Tiger Mother. Her book, a memoir, not a manual, describes the way she raised her children "the Chinese way" as opposed to the Western way, as superior. Her children have excelled in academics and music because they were brought up without frivolities such as sleepovers, watching TV, playing video games or school plays. Any grade less than an A was absolutely unacceptable. And, hours and hours of piano practice was demanded. For her, learning was mandatory, and practice makes perfect. She feels that the "learning should be fun" mentality is overrated and drill and practice is underrated. Her parenting methods have both been attacked and praised. In fact, there is ferocious buzz surrounding her parenting methods in the new Time magazine article, The Truth About Tiger Moms. In the subheading, Time asked, "Is that because she's onto something?" A couple of days ago when I was checking out the Beastly trailer online, I came upon another interesting movie trailer…. I am Number Four! It is based on the 448 page novel, I Am Number Four by Pittacus Lore. It is young adult science fiction published in the summer of 2010 about 9 kids who escape their own planet and are being hunted down one by one by the Mogadorians. Of the 9 kids, numbers 1-3 are dead and ‘John Smith’ is number four. He knows he will dead in a matter of days if he does not hide out until he develops enough power to defeat the Mogadorian enemies. He takes refuge on Earth and begins to dress, walk, talk, and act like a normal, typical human teenager. This is a great, fast-paced story that will catch your attention from the very beginning. We have one copy available for check out in the library. Now that the movie is coming out, you’ll definitly want to read it before you see it. By the way, the main character from I Am Number Four is played by the same actor that portrays the main character in Beastly. Cool, huh? I recently saw a preview for the movie, Beastly, coming to theatres in March. It looks pretty good and I will definitely go see it. If you have not yet read the book, published 4 years ago, come check it out now. The WHS library owns two copies! I got an opportunity to read it a couple of years ago when it was on the NTB list. Beastly, by Alex Flinn, is about Kyle, the classic good looking, rich, spoiled, self-indulgent high school kid living in New York. Yes, very cliche. The plot is a retelling of the classic tale of Beauty and the Beast. Kyle, being his typical rude self, sets out to humiliate Kendra, a girl from his class. But Kendra is not just any girl... she is actually a witch and punishes Kyle for his behavior by turning him 'beastly.' But she gives him two years to undo the spell. All he has to do is find somebody who will fall in love with him for who he really is and not what he looks like. The girl who falls for him must prove her love with a kiss. Kyle's dad is totally embarrassed by his new looks and makes him live in an apartment with Magda, a housekeeper and gets him a blind tutor, Will. Kyle changes his name to Adrian and starts gardening to pass the time. Then, interesting circumstances lead Adrian (AKA Kyle) to Lindy... how does she come into his life? Is she going to brake the curse? I thought the book was a good young adult fantasy. I hope the movie is good as well. From the preview, it looks like the movie is going to pretty much follow the book. So far, I can see that the author's description of the main character, Kyle, does not coincide with the director's vision. We'll see. But don't forget to read it before you see it. The Plot Escapes Me

Have you ever read a book only to forget its content the next day? Or walked through a library or book store browsing through titles, seeing books you know you've read but can't remember what they were about. This happens to me all the time. This happened to me the other day when a student asked about a book I know I've read but couldn't remember the plot. It made me remember an incident a few years back. About 5 years ago, I was in a book club that was 're-reading the classics.' It was a hodge podge of randomly selected (not by me) books deemed classics (not by me). The first book on the list we read was Tess of the D'urbervilles, which I read as a teenager. I didn't remember the plot of the book but did remember that I didn't get it and didn't like it. I really needed a better English teacher to point out all the scandalous parts. I definitely liked it more as an adult. The second book was The Scarlett Letter. That too I liked more as an adult than a teenager. Again, where was my English teacher pointing out the scandalous parts? I mean, seriously, these books were really exciting if you actually understand what you're reading. Anyway, the third book was Dracula, which I enjoyed both as a teenager and as an adult. The fourth book on the reading list was Anthem by Ayn Rand. When I saw the title on the list, I knew right away I hadn't read the book in the past and that I had to read it for the first time in the book club. Since I wanted to be prepared for book club discussion later in the month, I went to the library and checked it out right away and started reading. Meanwhile, a student, teacher, neighbor, someone asked if I owned a certain book and if they could borrow it. I went home and started scouring my shelves (I own a lot of books) looking for the book. Well, not only did I find the book I was searching for, but I also found a copy of Anthem. I picked it up off the shelf. Was this my book?? Did it get on my shelf by accident? Perhaps, someone left it at my home. I opened the book to the first page. My name was written neatly in cursive, in my own handwriting. Wow. I owned this book and didn't realize it. I flipped through the pages, stopping at random spots. Notes in the margin, highlighted and underlined passages. I realized, I had read the book in undergrad and had no recollection of anything having to do with the book. I wonder what I made it that class? I didn't enjoy the book as a college student or as an adult. But even today, the plot escapes me. What was that book about? Ironically, that was the last time we meet for that book club. Only two people showed for the Anthem month and the following month everyone dropped out. Lame. I didn't go back and re-read any of the other classics. And if you ask me about any of the books, I couldn't tell you much about them. I guess a good solution is to blog more about things I read so I have an actual account of books if someone asks for a summary. Anywho... here's an old article in the New York Times... Hush Hush

The word is getting around about Becca Fitzpatrick's book, Hush Hush. And teens, aren't so hush hush about their enthusiasm for the book. Our one copy is always checked out and others are placing holds, patiently waiting for the book's return to the library. In the book, the main character, Nora, is attracted to her new biology partner, but also put off by his awareness of her thoughts. Eventually, she learns that he is a fallen angel who wants to become human. She is susceptible to his control, but other forces are at work as well, and Nora finds herself caught in the middle of dangerous situations and unexplainable events. Can the Hunger Games movie be PG-13?

You guys know I'm obsessed with Suzanne Collins' The Hunger Games series! Now that the rights are sold for a movie, I can't wait for the movie to come out. But I do have my doubts. I mean, it is a pretty intense book, and translating the war, fighting and blood onto the big screen could easily send it into the R-rating hemisphere. But what would be the point of that? The books are intended for teens, and shouldn't the movie be intended for teens as well? I can't imagine them staying true to the book and keeping it PG-13... but that's what they will have to do. 127 Hours

Last year, I blogged about the true life story of a Colorado mountain climber, Aron Ralston, whose arm was trapped beneath a boulder for six days. His book, Between a Rock and a Hard Place was on all the best seller lists. NBC news correspondent, Tom Brokaw, even narrated a two hour documentary called Survivor: The Aron Ralston Story that aired on Dateline. Now, Aron's story is a major motion picture, 127 Hours, starring James Franco, released today. Already, the movie is receiving some serious Oscar buzz. Read about the movie in the Wall Street Journal and watch the trailer on Breaking Entertainment News. After you see the trailer, you'll definitely want to see the movie this weekend. Did you know that there were 460 challenged books in America last year? Celebrate the freedom to read by participating in Banned Books Week, September 25−October 2, 2010!

What’s Banned Books Week? According to the American Library Association, "it is an annual event celebrating the freedom to read and the importance of the First Amendment. Banned Books Week highlights the benefits of free and open access to information while drawing attention to the harms of censorship by spotlighting challenged or banned books across the United States." Don’t forget to stop by the library this week and check out a frequently banned book. Thanks to the efforts of the librarians, teachers, booksellers and community members, WHS had NO challenged books last year! We need everyone's help to retain books on the shelf and spread the word on the importance of our First Amendment rights! Free people read freely!

Did you know Blockbuster is filing for bankruptcy? Unfortunately, their old school way of getting movies out to the public was outdated, inefficient and ineffective. Now, with movies delivered in your mailbox, downloading, streaming, free movie on Hulu, etc., I was not shocking to hear the Blockbuster news. However, if you still like browsing shelves and choosing movies the old fashion way, don't be sad, I have a solution for you! Banned Books

Check out this Mom Houston blog on the Houston Chronicle website. It has a slide show of 75 books that have been banned over the years. Although Houston Independent School District did not report any challenges last year, many different districts in the Houston area have banned books from the library/ community.
